21st ICJW Convention





The 21 st Quadrennial Convention of the International Council for Jewish Women (ICJW) takes place at The Protea President Hotel in Cape Town from 6 - 12 May 2010.

The 21 st Quadrennial Convention of the International Council for Jewish Women (ICJW) has been awarded to the Union of Jewish Women of South Africa (UJWSA), to be held in Cape Town during May 2010.

This is the century of the empowerment of women. South Africa is a highly desired destination and the ICJW, with its 47 affiliate’s world wide, presents an ideal platform to display the strength of women in world affairs.

The ICJW has observer status at the United Nations with representation on UNESCO AND UNICEF in New York, Geneva, Paris, Vienna and Strasburg. Through its affiliates, the ICJW membership is well in excess of 1.5 million women who are engaged in various educational, social and legislative projects, in Jewish and non- Jewish communities.

Cape Town Conferences Objectives:

The 21 st International Convention entitled: Beyachad/Ubuntu/Together, will provide a platform for Jewish women from around the world to debate issues and formulate opinions and actions relating to:

  • Promoting feminine leadership
  • Boosting self-esteem among young women
  • Opposing domestic violence
  • Halting human trafficking
  • Encouraging interfaith and inter-cultural dialogue
  • Fighting anti-Semitism and racism
  • Freedom for Agunot (Jewish women awaiting religious divorce)
  • Creating Awareness of health and environmental issues.
  • HIV & Aids

    The Convention will also enable delegates to exchange ideas on approaches to volunteerism.

    21st ICJW Convention Cape Town Conferences Programme:

    The convention will run from Thursday 6 th May 2010 until Wednesday 12 th May 2010 at The Protea President Hotel in Cape Town.

  • Thursday 6th May: Pre Convention executive meeting
  • Firday 7th May: Day at leisure
  • Saturday 8th May: Look forward to the Gala Opening Ceremony & Dinner hosted by the City of Cape Town
  • Sunday 9th May: Convention working day / Evening Closing Dinner
  • Wednesday 12th May: Post Executive Committee meetings / Presidents lunch

    21st ICJW Convention Format:

    The Convention will take the form of plenary sessions with high profile key note speakers, and breakaway discussion groups, to facilitate exchange of opinions and ideas. The speakers and programme are in the process of being finalised.
