Southern Rights Delta Conference 09
The seventh bi-annual Southern Rights Delta Conference 09 takes place at The Villa Via, Gordon's Bay, South Africa from 29 November - 4 December 2009.
Mathematics in a dynamic environmentThe Southern Rights Delta Conference 09 is on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics taking place in the picturesque beach town of Gordon's Bay, close to Cape Town, South Africa. It forms part of the series of Delta conferences, a southern hemisphere initiative. Previous Delta conferences were held in: Brisbane, Australia in 1997 Laguna Quays, Australia in 1999 Kruger National Park, South Africa in 2001 Queenstown, New Zealand in 2003 Fraser Island, Australia in 2005 El Calafate, Argentina in 2007 09 is jointly organized by SAMF (South African Mathematics Foundation) and the International DELTA Committee.
Scientific programme informationConference Topics Organizers are interested in hearing any of a wide range of topics on the teaching of mathematics and statistics at university level. In the past, for example, there were papers on technology (computers, graphics calculators, CAS), bridging courses, large first year classes, modelling, teacher training, and the teaching of specific topics (e.g. analysis, algebra). Invited Speakers Bill Barton (New Zealand) Danielle Huillet (Mozambique) Bill McCallum (USA) Poobhalan Pillay (South Africa) Leigh Wood (Australia) Presentations Paper submissions for Southern Right Delta'09 are now being accepted. The submission of abstract-only presentations are also welcome. If you would like to submit a paper or an abstract for a presentation at Southern Right Delta'09, please make use of their online submission system. Workshops Workshops of 1-2 hours duration are intended to enhance the skills and broaden the perspective of their attendees. They should be designed for learning a new area or to provide advanced training in an area. Please note that computer laboratory facilities will not be available at the conference. Conference Proceedings There will be two conference publications: A special issue of the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology (iJMEST) Delta '09 peer-reviewed best papers received by May will be published in the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology (iJMEST). DELTA'09 Proceedings book. This will include peer-reviewed reports of teaching experiments/experiences and research papers, and the abstracts of all conference presentations. Participants may choose to only send an abstract. The deadline for submission of papers for iMEST and abstracts for the DELTA'09 Proceedings book is 29 May 2009 and for final papers for the Proceedings is 31 August 2009. Important Notes An accepted paper cannot be included in the proceedings or the programme without at least one author registering for the conference. All accepted papers will be considered for the outstanding paper award, which will be presented at the conference. The official language of the conference is English.
General informationVenue - Villa Via Hotel, Gordons Bay The Villa Via is approximately 40 minutes from the Cape Town city centre and 25 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. The hotel is situated in the heart of the Helderberg, boasting its own unique Winelands, and close to the prestigious Vergelegen and Lourensford wine estates. The famous Stellenbosch Wine Route is 15 minutes away from the hotel. Parking Parking is available on the premises of the hotel. Language The official language of the conference will be English. No simultaneous translation service will be provided. Admission Nametags Conference nametags must be worn by all participants at all times during the conference and on all conference premises. Nametags should also be worn when attending the events of the social program. Only participants or accompanying persons wearing their conference nametags will be admitted to the scientific sessions and the social events.
Social programmeSunday, 29 November 2009 Delegates are cordially invited to attend the Opening Cocktail Function to be held at the Villa Via Hotel. This function is included in the registration fee of delegates and accompanying persons. Please indicate attendance on the registration form. Wednesday, 2 December 2009 Mid-conference excursion. Please note that an additional cost will be charged to register of the excursion (not included in the Conference Registration fee). Thursday, 3 December 2009 Delegates are cordially invited to the Conference Dinner at Spier Wine Estate. One of the most famous sites in the Cape Winelands, the Spier estate near Stellenbosch proudly offers a beautiful setting of an historic 1000-hectare wine estate. The four-star Spier conference centre overlooks the Helderberg Mountain range and lies besides the calming waters of the Eerste River. The cost of the dinner is included for delegates, while accompanying persons can attend at a cost of R350 per person. Transport will be provided from the Villa Via Hotel. Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December Sit back and relax for a 1 hr cruise on Dreamcatcher a 45 ft catmaran while enjoying the spectacular view of the sun slowly vanishing below the horizon on an African Sunset Cruise.While cruising along the coastline from Gordons Bay ,along Bikini Beach and up to Steenbras Point you may encounter whales, dolphins and seals.
RegistrationThe registration fee includes attendance to the conference sessions, programme, abstract book, Opening cocktail function (Sunday evening) and the Conference Dinner on Thursday evening(please indicate your attendance when registering). Completed registration forms will be acknowledged by e-mail or fax. Please remember to fax a copy of the deposit slip in case of payment by direct deposit.
